Greater New York Councils is happy to announce an opportunity for its Scouts – a chance to join its Philmont Contingent next summer or in the near future. Each year, a select group of Scouts and Leaders is invited to join the Council Contingent excursion to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.

The contingent organizers are looking for groups of scouts, venture scouts, OA members, etc. and leaders to form our contingent “Core Crews” (between 7 and 12 people including up to 4 adults). Individuals (youth or adult) with an interest in going to Philmont are also encouraged to contact us and inquire about open spaces within a “Core Crew”.

Example:  Troop xyz has 5 scouts and 2 adult leaders interested in Philmont, this troop will make up a “Core Crew.” Billy scout wants to go to Philmont but his troop does not have the required number of participants. Billy scout will be grouped with Troop xyz, effectively becoming part of that “Core Crew” for Philmont.

For those “new” to Philmont, the preparation weekends are an opportunity to learn the skills necessary to have an exceptional backpacking experience and fully enjoy the trip. Also, these weekends are an opportunity to try out your “new backpacking equipment.” Be sure to SAVE ALL PURCHASE RECEIPTS, PACKAGING, & TAGS from your newly-purchased equipment . . . in case your backpack is not a good fit, boots are too tight, or other equipment is too heavy or otherwise inappropriate.

Philmont is NOT “automatic” for any participants, new or repeat. Scouts must be 14 years old (or, 13 & have completed 8th grade), First Class Scout or above, and demonstrate appropriate skills and behavior at the shakeout weekends.

Greater New York Councils will set up a payment account in order to accept deposits and further payments for Philmont, Summer 2016. Expected payment to GNYC is $1,850.

Please be aware that participation in the shake out hikes is crucial in determining maturity, capabilities and suitability for Philmont. Initial payments to GNYC do not guarantee participation and will be refunded if participation this summer is not appropriate.

Philmont Scout Ranch is a wonderful backpacking experience and a chance to solidify Scouting skills! It is truly the “University of Scouting!” For those who do not manage to make a GNYC Philmont trek with us this summer, please keep us in mind for future summers.
