Introducing the GNYC Big Apple Series Council Shoulder Patches
The Big Apple Series is a collection of Council Shoulder Patches created by the Greater New York Councils. Each edition showcases a different New York City landmark or icon. All proceeds from these patches directly funds the Scouting program in New York City.
Seven years ago, the Greater New York Councils began the Big Apple Series; a collection of CSP’s that highlight and share the icons of New York City with our Scouting Family worldwide. Following the Tribute in Light Edition, Freedom Tower Edition, the Rockefeller Holiday Edition, and last year’s NYC Subway Edition GNYC is proud to release the Empire Edition CSP.
The Empire State Building is one of New York City’s most recognizable icons. Completed in 1931, it reigned supreme over the NYC skyline as the world’s tallest building until 1970 with the construction of the first tower of the World Trade Center. The Empire State Building attracts more than 3.5 million visitors a year and for the last two decades, it has been home to the GNYC Service Center.
With GNYC relocating office space to the Upper West Side of Manhattan in December of 2018, there is no better way to commemorate our time in the Empire State Building than to highlight the icon in the Big Apple Series. This CSP depicts the building’s lights illuminated in the shape of a fleur-de-lis against a night sky. The Mylar version includes a silver mylar border and gold mylar stitching for the windows of the ESB as well as the amber lights of two other notable midtown icons; the New York Life Building and Madison Square Garden.

NYC Subway Edition:
Six years ago, the Greater New York Councils began the Big Apple Series; a collection of CSP’s that highlight and share the icons of New York City with our Scouting Family worldwide. Following the Tribute in Light Edition, the Freedom Tower Edition, and last year’s Rockefeller Holiday Edition, GNYC is proud to release the NYC Subway Edition CSP.
In a city full of icons, it can be easy to overlook the subway system because so much of it runs underground. However, with average weekday riders numbering over 5.5 million, this conduit of commuters helps keeps the busiest city running 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week. And as many visitors discover, the subway is not only the most economical and efficient way to travel around the city, but it is also an experience unto itself.
To celebrate the New York City subway system, the Greater New York Councils is proud to lend its name to this fictitious station entrance. And while the B train, S train and A train all exist in the NYC subway network, they do not ever all intersect at the same station. The patches come in two different versions – the standard black border or the gold version special mylar border and fleur-de-lis.

Freedom Tower Edition:
The completion of the Freedom Tower on Nov 3, 2014 helped to revitalize an area forever changed in 2001. The edifice now stands as a testament to our nation’s fortitude and resilience.
The set consists of six patches: one for GNYC plus one for each of the five boroughs of NYC. A limited edition silver-mylar bordered collector’s set is available – only 100 sets of these silver-mylar bordered patches were created.
The standard white-bordered Freedom Tower CSP’s can be purchased individually or as a set (GNYC, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island).
Limited Edition Silver-Mylar Collector’s Set – $75 for all 6 patches
Standard White-Border CSP’s – $5.00 each
Tribute in Light Edition:
The inaugural patch of the Big Apple Series, the ‘Tribute in Light’ and ‘Never Forget’ CSP’s have been shared worldwide since their release in 2011.
The Tribute in Light was first presented on the scene of Ground Zero on April 11, 2002, six months after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The Municipal Art Society of New York has presented it annually on 9/11 since. The majestic twin blue beams shine from dusk on September 11th through dawn the next day. The illuminated memorial reaches 4 miles into the sky and is visible within a sixty-mile radius on a clear night.
Tribute in Light CSP – $7.00 (Currently SOLD OUT)
Never Forget CSP (Never Forget ghost-written along New York Harbor) – $15.00
Rockefeller Tree Edition:
The holiday season is a truly magical time and the tree at Rockefeller Center is one of the most renown New York City icons. The first Rockefeller Christmas Tree was erected in 1931 during the Great Depression. Workers took a break from the construction of 30 Rockefeller Center to erect a 20’ tree, decorated with strings of cranberries, and garlands of paper and tin cans. In 1933, after ‘30 Rock’ was completed, the Christmas Tree became an annual tradition.
The patch highlights the iconic Prometheus statue, the famous tree (with fleur-de-lis topper) and ‘Happy Holidays’ ghost-written on the ice rink. The patch comes in two borders: green and holiday-themed, ‘candy-cane’ – red & white.
Green Border Rockefeller Tree CSP – $8.00
‘Candy-Cane’ Border Rockefeller Tree CSP – $14.00
